From the President
By Diane Mockbee, ACC, BS
I have been thinking about everything we do each day – at work, at home and I feel sometimes we are on a treadmill that won’t let us off. Maybe to some of you, it’s like the wheel in a hamster’s cage!! I know meetings dominate much of my time at work and I know they are worthwhile and meaningful – IF subjects talked about are actually followed through on and IF each person on the committee or at the meeting does their fair share. It’s like the on the NAAP Board as well. We all have assignments and jobs to do in our elected position with NAAP. That is one reason I put out a work calendar each year so that everyone knows when to complete a project by. Patrona Turman, our NAAP Secretary, puts out a timeline to discuss and to vote on motions presented. If she didn’t, things would never come to an end! With that being said, I am going to share more with you about our Strategic Planning Meeting held in November in Tennessee.
Before starting the actual strategic planning I discussed the definition of TEAM and asked each Trustee to remember the definition and components of a team as we worked to move NAAP forward. Everyone should agree to disagree and know that it’s alright to disagree. I also stated that I had hopes that the Strategic Planning meetings would be a part of each Mid-Year meeting even after leaving office as it is invaluable to the future of NAAP.
- National/International Development – a policy for attending State/National/International Conferences will be presented to the Board by January 31, 2008 for approval. There has been no policy in the past and it was felt that in order to maximize these opportunities we should have a policy and procedure. In addition to that we are placing in the first State Contact Packet each year a State Conference Information form so that if representatives can attend they can plan ahead, along with getting the state’s information on the website. National Conferences attended by NAAP Board Members in 2007: Were: AAHSA in Florida, Pioneer Network in Minnesota.
- Planning for 2008 attendance is AHCA, AAHSA, Pioneer and possibly ACHCA.
- Attempts are being made with Perspective magazine to have articles or advertisement in this publication. LTC Magazine does have an ad for NAAP. Since the Mid-Year Meeting, I was contacted by the editor of Nursing Home Long-term Care Magazine to have NAAP submit articles in a new section called, “Try This”. We naturally jumped on this and my article on the survey process was the inaugural article for this in January of 2008. Debbie Bera will be in February and Brenda Scott in March. So, watch for these articles!
- We are looking into developing NAAP In-Service Videos that could be purchased through the NAAP Office. Each video would include an in-service, test questions and CEU”s. An investigative committee was formed consisting of: Diane Mockbee, Susan Rauch and Debbie Bera.
- International Development: Troy Lott and Diane Mockbee will look into getting NAAP on international mailing lists. Troy is contacting countries that have NAAP members and asking to be put on their mailing lists. Troy also reported that there are 8 countries with certification and has contacted NCCAP for the names of those countries and how, if any, is the certification different that that of the United States. This is ongoing.
- Regional/International Workshops. I stated I had a goal of having one regional workshop per quarter, equaling at least 4 per year. One is now scheduled in Tennessee for March by Troy Lott and Patrona Turman, and I am working on possibly having one in Northern California and Nebraska.
- It was also decided to put the workshop registrations on better quality paper to look more professional and that we would offer our discounted membership with the registration instead of the day of just the day of event. In other words, if they register and join, they can have the membership rate to the workshop and the $50 membership. The $50 membership will be offered the day of the event as well, but will be advertised in the brochure so people can come prepared. This discounted fee is not good past the day of the event.
- At all conferences attended, each Trustee is talking to the Administrators so that they are aware of the importance of our association and having their Activity Professional belong to it.
- Each board member should ask to speak at their state conference.
- We are continuing to ask for free booths at the Trade Shows at national conferences.
- Increasing Committee and Sub-Committee Work. There was some confusion on the new form last year and all trustees didn’t receive all of their committee members. That is being revised for this year so that all people who sign up are contacted within a certain timeframe after conference. It was also decided that the only committees that need to sign a confidentiality statement would be Awards, By-Laws, Ethics and Scholarship. All others will now be exempt.
- We will continue the early-bird renewal because it is working.
- We will continue to offer discounted memberships at workshops we are at or by assigning a NAAP representative the authority to offer said discount. (This is for first-time members only and not renewals)
- Airports are being looked at for future conference sites to decrease airfare into those cities.
- No discounts will be given for conference registration if more than one person attends. This was discussed at great length but everyone needs to understand that we already offer a discounted rate to the Administrator if they send their Activity Director to the entire conference.
- NAAP is now in charge of all uploads to the website. There have been some problems but these are being worked out. Debbie Bera is the primary person for the updates and Lynn Gunter from the NAAP Office assists with conference registration, membership and more. If anyone has difficulty downloading anything please let the NAAP Office know immediately so we can get it fixed.
- The NAAP News is now being done from the NAAP Office and I do the proofing of the newsletter.
- Restructuring of the board is ongoing at this time as with each election, positions are being realigned with other positions to decrease board numbers and save NAAP money for travel, etc.
- Debbie Bera developed a leteter to the Administrators that was added to the NAP Week Packet.
- It was discussed that NAAP needs to utilize the attendee lists from the national conferences more. This is ongoing.
- We decided to do a facelift to the NAAP News with a different layout and perhaps encouraging people to read their newsletters more.
- Diane spoke with WGBH-TV who is writing a grant for public service radio and television and who wants to partner with NAAP. This is ongoing and no further information has been received at the writing of this article.
- The State Contact Breakfast was discussed at great lengths and instead of offering a speaker during this session, we will continue to Round Table Session so that states can ask questions and offer suggestions on the needs of their states and our membership.
As you can see, we spent a great deal of time discussing these projects and we feel we are getting a handle on much of it. Some items will be ongoing but we will continue to pursue new avenues for NAAP to become involved in.
We look forward to spending time with you at the conference and hope you take the time to speak with us about your ideas, thoughts, concerns and of course, we’d love to have some praise as well!!
