Sample Job Description - Activity Consultant - Geriatric Setting

Summary:
Assists geriatric settings in the development, implementation, and evaluation of an activity program, which meets/exceeds applicable federal, state and local regulations and the individual geriatric setting’s policies and procedures.
Personal Characteristics:
- Sincere interest and desire to work with elders and others in the geriatric continuum of care.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interact with clients, families, staff and the public.
- Organizational, managerial, and motivational skills.
- Knowledge of the field of gerontology as it relates to geriatric settings.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to the geriatric setting in which he/she works.
- Capable of recognizing problems and developing a quality assurance action plan.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work-related matters.
Qualifications:
- Certification as a Consultant by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) or
- Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or
- At least 2 years of documented Activity Professional experience within the geriatric activity setting, or have served his/her internship in the geriatric setting he/she plans to consult too.
Responsibilities:
- Serves as an educator, advisor and facilitator to the geriatric setting’s staff in clinical administrative, managerial, and professional arenas.
- Provides a written record of all consultation.
- Maintains current certification level.
- Keeps up-to-date regarding medical information, techniques and resources as these relate to the field of activities
- Keeps current on diseases commonly found in a geriatric setting.
- Audits activity related documentation.
- Assists with the state/federal survey as requested or where applicable.
- Participates in professionally sponsored educational opportunities as both an educator and a student.
- Follows geriatric setting’s policies and procedures at all times.
